This study presents a systematic review of the literature on the possible antidepressant effect of oral extract of Matricaria chamomilla L. in humans. Method: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed and SCOPUS up to March 12, 2026, using key terms related to chamomile, depression, and oral administration. Randomized clinical trials and quasi-experimental studies evaluating depressive symptoms through validated scales (HRSD, BDI, HAM-D) in human populations were included, while in vitro and animal studies were excluded. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the RoB 2.0 tool. Among the studies identified, three exploratory trials met the inclusion criteria, all focusing on patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and comorbid depression. Results: The findings indicated that oral chamomile extract (doses ranging from 220 mg to 1500 mg/day for 8 weeks) produced significant reductions or clinically relevant trends in depression scale scores (HRSD/HAM-D, BDI) in the subgroup with comorbid depression, suggesting a potential antidepressant action beyond its well-known anxiolytic effects. Proposed mechanisms include GABAergic modulation (apigenin), monoaminergic influence, regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Although promising, these findings derive from exploratory studies in comorbid populations, which limits their generalization to primary Major Depressive Disorder. Conclusion: Oral extract of Matricaria chamomilla L. shows potential as a complementary intervention for depressive symptoms; however, well-designed controlled clinical trials in patients with primary major depression are required to validate its efficacy and safety as an antidepressant treatment

BackgroundMedicinal plants have been used traditionally since centuries for wound care and treatment of skin diseases both in human and animals. Skin diseases are one of the most common reasons for owners to take their dog to the veterinarian. The demands for treatment and prophylaxis of these diseases are broad. A wide range of bacteria including antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be involved, making the treatment challenging and bear an anthropo-zoonotic potential. The aim of this review is to systematically evaluate based on recent scientific literature, the potential of four medicinal plants to enrich the therapeutic options in pyoderma, canine atopic dermatitis, otitis externa, wounds and dermatophytosis in dogs.ResultsBased on four books and a survey among veterinarians specialized in phytotherapy, four medicinal plants were chosen as the subject of this systematic review: Calendula officinalis L. (Marigold), Hypericum perforatum L. agg. (St. John's Wort), Matricaria chamomilla L. (syn. Matricaria recutita L., Chamomile) and Salvia officinalis L. (Sage). According to the PRISMA statement through literature research on two online databases a total of 8295 publications was screened and narrowed down to a final 138 publications for which full-text documents were analyzed for its content resulting in a total of 145 references (21 clinical, 24 in vivo and 100 in vitro references).ConclusionsAll four plants were proven to have antibacterial and antifungal effects of a rather broad spectrum including antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This makes them an interesting new option for the treatment of pyoderma, otitis externa, infected wounds and dermatophytosis. Marigold, St. John's Wort and Chamomile showed wound-healing properties and are thus promising candidates in line to fill the therapeutic gap in canine wound-healing agents. St. John's Wort and Chamomile also showed anti-inflammatory and other beneficial effects on healthy skin. Due to the wide range of beneficial effects of these medicinal plants, they should be taken into account for the treatment of dermatologic diseases in dogs at least in future clinical research.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is commonly a neurodevelopmental behavioural disorder in children and adolescents. Mainly characterized by symptoms like lack of attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness, it can impact the overall mental development of the one affected. Several factors, both genetic and non-genetic, can be responsible for this disorder. Although several traditional treatment methods involve medication and other counselling techniques, they also come with different side effects. Hence, the choice is now shifting to alternative treatment techniques. Herbal treatments are considered one of the most popular complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) administered. However, issues related to the safety and efficacy of herbal remedies for the treatment of ADHD need to be investigated further. This study aims to find out the recent advancement in evidence-based use of herbal remedies for ADHD by a comprehensive and systematic review that depicts the results of the published works on herbal therapy for the disorder. The electronic databases and the references retrieved from the included studies present related randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and open-label studies. Seven RCTs involving children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD met the inclusion criteria. There is a fair indication of the efficacy and safety of Melissa officinalis L., Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst., Matricaria chamomilla L., and Valeriana officinalis L. from the studies evaluated in this systematic review for the treatment of various symptoms of ADHD. Limited evidence was found for Ginkgo biloba L. and pine bark extract. However, various other preparations from other plants did not show significant efficacy. There is inadequate proof to strongly support and recommend the administration of herbal medicines for ADHD, but more research is needed in the relevant field to popularize the alternative treatment approach.
